Right now during the Lord of The Flies I am reading the events weeks after the fire and the steps that the characters are taking to recreate a home atmosphere on the island. Dr. D explained that a common tool in this book is symbolic meanings. There are more insights on the main characters than there was in the beginning. These insights help me to understand each character more of the symbolic meaning of their characteristics.
I've tried to make connections to of symbolic meanings for some things. I may not be right but this is just my opinion. I believe that the conch represent order/civilized behavior. Order cannot exist when too much chaos is present as the book will portray. Piggy's glasses represent human progress. I also believe that the main characters represent certain basic human traits. For instance, Piggy is intelligence, but also laziness, fragility, and dependency. Jack is jealousy, anger/rage, and eager for anarchy. Simon represents spirituality, peace, and kindness. Ralph I think represents power, authority, and leadership.
I agree with you Trevor with the symbolic meanings. I also agree and like how you came up with the idea of the conch being a kind of sorta civilized behavior. Good work.
