hits and misses

The writing I put the most overall time into are these blog posts. I spend an hour each week trying to match the prompt and most of the time can feel proud about what I publish. One of my favorite blog posts that I wrote was my week six symbolism post. I remember I wrote about a man on a subway who wants to show his fellow blue-collar worker a meme he made and whose dogs gets away and dies in the subway tracks. I used symbolism to show depression and loneliness.

The work I felt the least confidence in turning in was my Lord of the Flies analysis. I just felt at points it was sloppy and jumble. I felt like I could have done a little better and learned a bit more from my research paper. Although I did learn a lot I didn't really learn what I had set out to in the first place.

5. Women are more compassionate and less violent than men.
- I think that this statement is a little vague.  I think that men are more often put into situations that require violence such as military positions and having to protect family and friends from harm. This is due to the biological different between men and women. However I think women are equally if not a bit more violent than men. Studies actually show that women tend to be the assaulter in domestic situations. I'll include a link to one study.

2. I strongly disagree that people who have power are always happy. With great power comes great responsibly and responsibility doesn't translate to happiness. Perhaps when things are going well and your power is being reflected well it may bring some solace, but if things are not going well then your responsibility is reflected poorly which could bring more negativity into one's life. I can be a good and a bad thing to have power but it doesn't translate to one or the other.

Book Challenge information

I would not necessarily say that Purple Hibiscus is a challenging book but it does require some attention while reading to appreciate or understand what is going on. While reading the book I always tend to look for unexplained information. An example was when Kambili first saw Papa's rash. The book went into great detail describing the rash with little context to it.

I mean the other way I make sure I am reading the book well is that I read the sections assigned on time. It does seem like a given but it is true. If people want to know what is going on in class they need to keep up with the reading assignments. So much happens now that we are at the end of the book in every section that the conversation in class is completely different day to day. Also people can read with the group they can ask appropriate questions when they are confused or curious.

New York Times suggestion

Prompt 169."What can you learn from other religions?"

What I have observed from other religions is that people have a tendency to try to use religion to explain what they do not know and that people also tend to think that there is some sort of higher power. It makes sense that when people do not know things their imagination would wander and create explanations. In ancient times there much less knowledge of the sciences and religion seemed much more logical. Even today some people still believe the world was created only a couple thousands of years ago because to them it makes sense.

Most all religions believe that there is a supernatural higher power that governs the world. Some of the time an afterlife will accompany this god or deities. I think it's because we all want some sort of justice for our actions and justice may not always come in life so people hope it does in death. With a god watching them their actions can be justified by something more than just human. Personally I am Christian but I don't know to an extent if my belief is based on faith or a fear of inevitable death.

Marijuana Should be legal.

The article I chose to read was about David Frum's view on judicial punishments for marijuana use use. I chose to respond to this article because i have strong opinions on the way narcotics should be handled for recreational use and CNN is the easiest way to find these opinions. The view of the article proposes the charges for marijuana be lessened but keep it illegal. He states that it is unfair that tobacco and alcohol are legal but not pot. Marijuana being illegal creates illegal markets which creates organized crime.

I agree that the sentencing for pot use should go down but I would prefer a drop of charges all together.  I believe that people need to be responsible for their actions weather they are drunk, high, or sober all the same. I think most all of narcotics should be legal for the individual of age to choose if he wants to use them or not and that the person alone should be responsible for their actions. This way the FDA can actually monitor these drugs and make them even safer for the public who would use them legally or not and educate the public before use. Things like synthetic marijuana that can be more harmful will become less popular. Organized crime would go down as people can now use them within the confines of the law. People in my opinion should be able to treat their bodies to what ever the person chooses as long as they are responsible. They should always self educate themselves of the risks and rewards.

Last weekend

So this weekend we had a three day break which was very appreciated. On Friday I had a track meet which did not go to well for me. However we did overall we the meet. The next day not much happened. I mainly just stayed home and played video games.

On Sunday all high school track members had to go to Episcopal and help out at the middle school meet. The reason our help was so needed was because the meet was one of the biggest track meets this year with around 1500 athletes coming. I actually had a good time while working there because I was able to use the grill and cook hamburgers and hot dogs most of the meet. I only slightly burned myself once but it wasn't bad.

Learning reflection.

Now that it is the fourth quarter I can look back and reflect on my learning progress. I see now that as long as I pay attention in class that I can do well on test. I mean that doesn't mean I always do great it is just for the most part though. And as good I'm talking about at least a B.

Another thing is that I have a hard time doing homework sometimes. Often I get home really late and exhausted and have to finish my homework in the morning after. Study Hall does help some though. Overall I think I have learned quite a bit about myself for these last three quarters.

free post about Mardi Gras break

So during the Mardie Gras break I didn't travel anywhere. I mainly stayed home and played video games and watched TV. I mainly just played CSGO and watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I also went to a friends house for two days.

Additionally I had three track practices. They weren't bad but they made me wake up early some days. We had our first meet for track on Saturday.  I ran the two mile and managed to score just one point for varsity. The results put my brothers name it but that's okay.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen analysis

link to lyrics: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS720US721&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=lyrics+to+bohemian+rhapsody&*

At the beginning of the song the tone is very depressing. Phrases such as "Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality" and "Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me" show depression and low self worth. Other lyrics like "I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy" express remorse and self pity. The lyrics repeat the thought of death and our meaninglessness. The music has a very slow beat with the main background music consisting mainly of piano.

At about half way through the song the beat changes to be less sad and more exiting. Many meaningless but emotional phrases are added to the song such as  "Bismillah!" and "Galileo". Many phrases are repeated by the main singer and the background singers. Then the beat changes again. The words become more accusing and seem to be said with more self worth. Then it ends like it started with the feeling of being unimportant.

Vocab post

Once there was a hairy little boy know as Ted. One day Ted deemed going out and exploring at night a good idea and did so. On his exploration Ted saw an opening to the sewer. Ted was curious and decided to explore the sewer like Idubbztv during Legit Food Review. After five minutes of exploring Ted saw a dim light around a corner. Ted peers the corner and sees none other than the Tattletale Strangler, and indicted killer.

Ted was so mortified that he ran as fast as he could out of the sewer. When Ted made it all the way back to his house his parents gave him quite the censure. Ted learned his lesson about sneaking out and exploring during the night. Now Ted is a smarter and wiser person because of his experience.

Poem

I sit in my seat

 and set my silverware.

I prepare for a feast.

I am greeted hello

by the waffle's aura.

I am engulfed

Into the waffle.

The waffle is engulfed

Into me.

Until it is

No more.

Personification, Sibilance, and euphony.

Research

One skill that I have learned through this project is to find and use the information found in sources more efficiently. In other words I can better use and organize raw information. Another skill I have gained is that now I can better organize my thoughts in an arguable arrangement. I fell like these new skills will help me to be a much better writer down the line.

The one aspect of the project that I am unfaithful in is the presentation for history. I didn't really get enough information on it for what I was originally planning. I am also worried about the quality of my presentation in comparison to those of others. I feel like we didn't get enough time to work on it as well.

Reading response

TATPTDOPTI is a honesty a fun book to read. I enjoy the tone of the book. Its a lightly toned book with few but really powerful moments of seriousness. I am very close to finishing it and look forward to the ending. Also I think

I also really enjoy the plot. I think the concept of a sort of outcast becoming the outcast of a society of outcasts an amusing topic. Also knowing that the events in the book are based off of true events and the writers life makes the story feel much more realistic and intuitive. The cartoon drawing also add to the connection we feel with the main character. Also I think Diary of a Wimpy Kid copied this book.

The Indian diary book response

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is probably the most fun book that I have had to read for school. It's fun to read and the best part is that I do not have to annotate it. The first noticeable thing about the book is it's pictures. The pictures are just low quality sketches made out to be on loose-leaf paper. They all are pretty simplistic but entertaining and enjoyable.

The book is a very strange book to be chosen for a class read. There are a lot of sensitive topics that the book talks about with out very much concern. For that reason I find it interesting but not at all awkward to read. Right now I am about half way done reading it and look forward to finishing it.

free post

This coming weekend I am looking forward to my second half-marathon race. I ran my first for a good time and to do well. This time am looking to do it with more people so probably a much slower pace. I plan to run it more leisurely and less as a race.

The race is on Sunday in New Orleans. I have to be there pretty early in the morning. I'll probably have to wake up at 2 or so to properly prepare. It should be a fun event though because there will be a lot of free food and I also think some bands are preforming and just stuff like that. To clarify, a half marathon is 13.1 miles.

Post about last semester

What I learned most about myself last semester is that I will procrastinate my work more than anyone else I know. For instance I posted around half of my blogs late last semester when I could have easily done them earlier in the week. Another example is that I am writing this blog at nine in the night the day it is due. I know people enjoy my blogs, especially Charles Lee, a lovely guy, and I would hate to keep up my bad habit of posting and doing work late.

This semester I am really working on doing my work in a timely and organized fashion. My goal is to turn as little work in late as possible. I believe a good way to help me accomplish this amazing feat is to make better use of my time in study hall. Another way I will work to be on time is to not leave any work until the morning that it is due.

My research project

My thesis for the project is "How do terrorists justify their actions and in what way Islam involved?". I feel like my project will shed some light on the general reasons for not only terrorism, but Islamophobia as well. I feel that when acts of terror happen some people are very quick to put blame on broad group of people, particularly Muslims. I am writing this to better educate myself on the topic of terrorism and understand why people think it may hold value.

So far I have three general reasons I am observing through research. The first reason is that terrorism is a response by fundamentalist Islams who fear impending western culture. The second reason is because the Islamic Empire conquered a vast amount of area by sometimes means of violence and Islamic groups like ISIS who are trying to create a similar government feel that the violence created by the Islamic empire justifies their own. My third point is text from the Qur'an. The Qur'an is interpreted in different ways but while some are very peaceful some interpretations do encourage violence and the punishment of non-Muslim people.

Free topic

For 2017 I have made some goals for myself to accomplish this year. One of main goals is to finish every assignment on time. I know that for most people that is not a problem but for me I have trouble finding time to finish everything. I am also a filthy procrastinator and feel like I can accomplish my goal by absolving that bad habit.

My other big goal is to run in the cross country state meat. In order to do this I must be seventh of the team. This is going to be very difficult because of people like Gram Frazer (returning state champion), Kenny Schafer, Michal Lee, William Kennedy, Austin, and David Whitehurst. In order to do this I need to work harder then the competition for the seventh spot like James, my closest competitor. I am looking to drop my three mile race time by one minute this year. That might not seem like much but in terms of a race that is the transition of dozens of places in a meet.

Research so far.

Currently I am working on note cards for the project. The process of making note cards, while it is tedious, is much better than working on the annotated bibliography. The note cards are really helping me to the information that I have obtained from my sources. Some of my sources have fundamental disagreements but have enough information to help me form my own opinion.

The hardest part of the project so far was finding enough sources to get all the information I needed. To be honest I think that this project is a good opportunity to research something that genuinely interests you and to enjoy doing it. I enjoy researching my topic and I think that the broad option of topics that there were give most people a chance do something they like. The one thing I fear is that I will mess up on something or get behind and end up screwing myself for this project.
